TEAMS

HOW MANY PEOPLE SHOULD BE IN A TEAM?

The team should be 1 to 6 people, so you can go as a lone wolf or gather together with your friends! You don’t need to register your team prior to the event unless specified otherwise in particular task’s terms.

I DON’T HAVE A TEAM, WHAT NOW?

No problem with that! You can work alone but…

If you want to form a team there are two ways to find team members:

  • register to our Discord where’s a special channel for attendees looking to join or form a new team
  • We will provide a special Team Building space on the spot where we will help you find team members. The Team Building will take time from 12 to 1pm in the Mentors Village (The location of Mentors Village can be found on the venue maps located on the screens around the venue)

If you’re impatient you can start looking for your teammates just now on HackYeah Discord and on the HackerEarth platform!

HOW CAN I BE IN MULTIPLE TEAMS AT ONCE?

HackerEarth allows one person to be in only one team. If you are in more than one team then please create a new account and join another team from this account.

CAN I CHANGE MY TEAM DURING THE HACKATHON?

Sure, you can change your team as many times as you want. Just make sure to be a member of one when you upload the project, this is the final declaration of who is in your squad.

If you’re uploading to HackerEarth then it is not possible to change the team members once the project is submitted, however if your team wins then you will state the final members of Winner Sheet.

WE HAVE A TEAM, WHAT NOW?

Find a place where your team can work.

Plug in the internet cable.

Read the requirements of the task you want to work on, if you agree with them, proceed. If you’re lost or not sure what to do, go to the Partners Zone or Mentors Village and let them help you!

If you don’t know how to get to the Mentors Village and Partners Zone check it out on the venue maps located on the screens around the venue.

CAN I BE IN MORE THAN ONE TEAM?

Yes! No problem with that! We do not verify your team until you upload the project, it is totally up to you in how many teams you’ll be a part of.

Just make sure that if your tasks require uploading to HackerEarth and you upload more than one you need to use a different email address for each of them.

WILL I GET A PRIZE IF I’M IN TWO TEAMS AT THE SAME TIME AND WE WIN IN TWO CATEGORIES?

Yes, of course!

TASKS

WHAT ARE THE TASKS?

There are two types of tasks:

  • Open tasks in three categories: Communication, Environment and Security. In these categories, the direction in which you’ll go is completely up to you! We are not giving you any more details on the tasks, you will need to decide how do you understand and want to interpret it.

  • Partners tasks are the ones our partners came up with. They have special requirements and regulations so make sure to read them before starting. Double-check on hackyeah.pl where to upload the task (HackerEarth or other platform)

WHAT ARE THE MAIN TASKS?

The main tasks are tasks proposed by us, the organizers. Each year we choose 3 different categories. In 2019 those are: Communication, Environment and Security.

It is up to you how you interpret the tasks and what your solution will be. If you do not have an idea what to work on then please visit Mentors Village; each year we invite mentors from various NGOs related to main categories. They will gladly give you ideas what to work on.

WHAT ARE THE PARTNERS TASKS?

Partners Tasks are tasks created by Partners of HackYeah. The details of each task are described at hackyeah.pl. Before you start solving them please read carefully their terms (available on website) and make sure where to upload them (information on website).

WE HAVE FINISHED, WHAT NOW?

Upload your project to the platform required for each task. Majority of the tasks should be uploaded to HackerEarth, however each Partner might choose their own platform. Check the tasks descriptions to learn where to upload your project.

Finished early?

  • If you feel like your task might win, start thinking about your pitch (the short presentation in which you’ll briefly tell the judges about your project).
  • Start another task! There is no limit on how many you can fulfill!
  • You’re tired and don’t feel like doing anything? Help yourself to some snacks, chill while playing on PlayStation or go to the Community Zone.

I’M NOT PROUD OF MY PROJECT, DO I HAVE TO UPLOAD IT?

No, if you don’t like what you came up with it is not mandatory to upload it. Yet we still encourage you to try as maybe the judges will see something in it that you don’t see!

WHO OWNS THE RIGHTS TO WHAT WE CREATE?

It depends on a task.

In the Main Tasks, it is you who keep all the rights to the projects.

Some Partner Tasks might require you to transfer the rights after you accept the prize. To make sure what are the regulations in your task check the rules of it. You will find a link with regulations next to the task description.

HOW CAN I UPLOAD MY FINISHED PROJECT?

You should upload it to the platform required by the terms of the task.

The Main Tasks need to be uploaded to the HackerEarth platform. Here you can find a dedicated FAQ for HackerEarth

Partners Tasks may have different regulations, check the rules in the task section on the website.

CAN I TAKE PART IN MORE THAN ONE TASK?

Sure, do as many as you can! There are no limits to that!

Just make sure that if your tasks require uploading to HackerEarth and you upload more than one you need to use a different email address for each of them.

WHAT IF I DON’T MAKE IT ON TIME TO UPLOAD THE PROJECT?

The Deadline is the deadline. You cannot bend it and cannot break it so better make sure everything is ready a few minutes earlier not to miss it! You can upload not finished project on HackerEarth earlier and keep changing it later — this way you won’t miss the deadline.

DO I NEED TO PRESENT MY IDEA?

If you make it to the Pitches, then yes. The jury chooses best teams from each task and invites them to separate rooms to pitch and present.

HOW DO I KNOW MY TEAM HAS BEEN CHOSEN AS A FINALIST TO PITCH?

After 12 pm on Sunday please watch our Discord, Twitter, Facebook, or keep your eyes on the screen on scene. The finalists will be published there.

I CAN'T CREATE A TEAM!

This may be because once you are a member of a team you cannot create a new one.

But there is an easy solution! Simply set up a new account with a new email address, and we promise it will work!

I CAN'T JOIN ANOTHER TEAM! / ANOTHER TASK!

The reason for this might be the fact that you are a member of a different team. Simply set up a new account with a new email address and use it to join another team/task!

TEAM

CAN I CHANGE THE NAME OF OUR TEAM?

Yes! As long as you didn’t upload your task solution, you can edit the team name. Click the view team button to edit the name.

CAN I CHANGE THE MEMBERS OF THE TEAM?

CAN I REMOVE SOMEONE FROM MY TEAM?

Yes! As long as you didn’t upload your task solution, you can add/remove team members. Click the view team button to edit your crew.

CAN I BE IN MORE THAN ONE TEAM?

Yes but to do so you have to have a separate account for each team. Use two different email addresses while registering and tell your new teammates to invite you to the second team with the new one.

UPLOADING THE SOLUTION

WHEN SHOULD I UPLOAD THE TASK?

The deadline passes on 12:00 PM on Sunday. But… don’t leave it for the last moment, the platform is rock solid but imagine 2 500 people will try to upload their solutions all at once… It might lead to an accidental DDOS attack.

IN WHAT FORMAT SHOULD THE PRESENTATION BE PREPARED?

Prepare it in any program you want but please save it in the PDF format — not all judges will have PowerPoint, keynote or whatever you use and all of them will be able to see PDF file.

HOW TO DO THE PRESENTATION OF THE PROJECT?

Make it a short PDF file, it can me done in PowerPoint, keynote or anything else. Make sure to use any mock-ups, screenshots you have, describe your idea briefly but with all the details you believe are important, let it be an online pitch of your project.

CAN I SUBMIT ONE PROJECT TO MORE THAN ONE CATEGORY?

Hackerearth allows you to submit one project to only one category, so we believe the answer is no.

WHAT TO PUT INTO THE PROJECT DESCRIPTION?

It should be a short description (more of a 3 paragraphs than 3 pages). Tell the judges what is the problem you are solving, how you want to solve it, how is the project supposed to work, don’t tell them the story of the world cause they won’t have time to read it all.

HOW LONG SHOULD BE THE PROJECT DESCRIPTION?

It should be rather short (let’s say 3 paragraphs max). Remember that the judges have to evaluate plenty of projects, so they don’t have the time to read your 5 page essay 😉

IN WHAT LANGUAGE SHOULD I DESCRIBE THE PROJECT?

Do it in English please! Some of the judges do not speak polish, so they won’t be able to evaluate your project if you do it in polish.

HOW SHOULD I UPLOAD THE SOURCE CODE OF THE PROJECT?

Please put it all in one repository that can be checked out online (GitHub, Bitbucket, Gitlab etc), if your code consists of few modules (API, web, mobile) you can place them in separate folders.

HOW LONG SHOULD BE THE VIDEO ABOUT THE PROJECT?

Don’t make it to long. 3 minutes is a maximum of how much a judge can spend on watching it. Make it an awesome ad of your project, not a story of the universe (not that the history of the universe is not interesting… it’s just that the judges didn’t come here to hear it ;))

WHAT TO ADD FOR MY PROJECT TO LOOK GOOD?

Add anything you have, mock-ups, simulations, sketches, prototypes, screenshots, let the jury see the full picture of your project.

IF YOU HAVE A DEMO…

Please remember to upload it with an example passes because the judges have to have access to it.
